5 Things I Understand


  • John Howard Griffin wants to explore the racial segregation in the south much more up close, and personal by taking skin medicine that darkins skin complexion so that he may become black.

  • Throughout his whole transformation from white to black, he goes through a series of conflicts with himself in which he does not recognize himself now that he is black.

  • When he becomes black and heads down to the south to begin his journey he encounters racial situations.
  • He plans on staying there for a while.
  • he feels that this journey he is about to go through will change his life forever.

  • why does he suddenly want to do this color change?
  • what does he hope to accomplish?
