5 Things I Understand

• Howard finally left the south and headed home after his 5 month journey in the south as a black man.
• When he gets home he is unsure whether he would still be welcomed into his parents home, but he was when he got there.
• When he gets home, he had learned of people burning crosses outside if his home.
• He received abusive letters from many white southerners.

4 Questions i have

• whose idea was it to leave for Mexico to start a new life?
• Does he think his life is in danger?
• who is that person that planned to castrate him?
• where does he go from here?

5 Things I Understand

• Whites are targeting with rather mental hate against him.
• he is so fed up with it and scared he doesn't want to to be black anymore.
• The situation was too much to handle for him.
• He tries to "assimilate" back into white culture by rubbing his skin till it was white, and where clothes to make his black skin look white.
• his shift back to his own race seemed to work when he was welcomed into an all white bar and nobody recognized that he was black.

• How much rubbing does it take to turn his skin back to white?
• Has he now know what it feels like to be a Negro in the south or just a Negro period?

5 Things I Understand

• He stays there dispite the threats he gets.
• he travels farther into the south to the town of Biloxi, Mississippi.
• To kepp beaches up, whites enforce a tax on gallons of gas in ehich everytime a negroe bought a gallon of gas, a penny would go to to the beach to keep it up for white use.
• While walking he was approached by many white people even ofered rides.
• during that he was often asked about sexual references of that of a negroe.

5 Things I Understand

• in the south Howard is experiencing racial discrimination now that he is a negroe.
• the first is when he wanted to get off at his top but the white bus driver dropped him off 8 blocks away from his stop.
• A new quest comes along, that he wants to go deeper into the racial tensions betweens blacks and whites by going to the most hated place for blacks: Mississippi.
• first impressions in MS is that negroes get comfort from their own race, and people are nice there.
• I feel as if so far as a negroe he has not gone through what many go through everyday in the segregated south.

5 Things I Understand

• John Howard Griffin wants to explore the racial segregation in the south much more up close, and personal by taking skin medicine that darkins skin complexion so that he may become black.


• Throughout his whole transformation from white to black, he goes through a series of conflicts with himself in which he does not recognize himself now that he is black.


• When he becomes black and heads down to the south to begin his journey he encounters racial situations.
• He plans on staying there for a while.
• he feels that this journey he is about to go through will change his life forever.

• Montag finally realizes that it was in Chicago that he met Millie.
• It seems as the concussion helped him remember when they met 10 years ago.
• The fall of the old city built a new one. and the author used many similes and metaphors to say how different it was after.
• The dust seems to capture the whole scenery of the fire ablaze city.
• It seems that Montag is happy that he has accomplished what he did in a way.
